En 1917 el cineasta Cecil B. DeMille tomó como base para The Woman God Forgot, considerado su primer largometraje épico, la primera novela de Lew Wallace, con las ilustraciones de Eric Pape, sobre la conquista de Tenochtitlán. Esta obra dependía de un imaginario que perduraba sobre el México azteca desde mediados del siglo XIX gracias al libro History of the Conquest of Mexico de William Prescott y los escritos e imágenes de zonas mayas realizados por John Lloyd Stephens y Frederick Catherwood. A ello se sumó una combinación de elemen-tos del arte académico europeo, de la arqueología y el exotismo, y el espíritu de expansionismo anglosajón, existente desde los tiempos de los puritanos. El hecho de que DeMille empleara los referentes visua-les asociados a este imaginario da cuenta de su pervivencia en la cultura estadounidense.
