Abstract

It is to be celebrated that works of pictorial art from the Viceroyalty continue to be found in the northern territories, above all from the eighteenth century, thus continuing to extend our knowledge of the painters active during that century. This is the case of the canvases that make up three apostolate paintings: one signed by Ventura Miranda, another by Nicolás Correa and one more of unknown authorship. These paintings belong to the first three decades of the century when the city of Durango was undergoing a construction boom and all of its churches and convents were being renovated, calling for a large number of artistic works for decoration and devotion. Finally, these apostolates evidence the vicissitudes undergone by collections of the Viceroyalty, an example of which is to be found in the fact that these canvases are now in the church of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, built in the last decade of the nineteenth century.
