Abstract
The importance of painting on copper is revealed in this study by Clara
Bargellini. The technique was transmitted to the Americas from Italy and
Flanders and the paintings transmitted a great variety of compositional
elements ranging from iconographic motifs to effects of light. This study
demonstrates that, in addition to prints, paintings on copper also caused a
strong impact on art. Thanks to the availability of copper in America,
especially in New Spain, this technique flourished there. This kind of
painting had a great demand and motivated the production of different
objects ranging from easel paintings to nuns’ badges.
