Abstract
It is impossible to observe the original location of furniture in the
interior of ancient houses on account of the modifications that have
occurred over the years. María del Pilar López Pérez therefore studies the
inventories which give detailed accounts of the items in every room.
Through the inventories we can learn the average number of rooms which
existed in each house, their typical distributions, and the designations
and uses given to them. The author transcribes and analyzes several
documents from the city of Santafé de Bogota in order to get an approximate
idea of the physical structures of 18th century houses. She is able to
detect the function of the rooms, and identify the items that once
ornamented them. In this manner, the author offers valuable information for
further research on the relationship between humans and their dwellings.
This will increase our understanding of social behavior in colonial times.
