Abstract

This work centers its attention on a significant group of New Spanish paintings depicting the Passion, which were inspired by the engravings of Jesuit Jerónimo Nadal (1507-1580), while proposing a hypothesis regarding their circulation. Although many of these compositions form part of a narrative series, the side altarpiece of the Nuestra Señora de los Dolores Parish Church in Xaltocán is the only case that establishes a complete narrative cycle based on the Images of Nadal. As each of these works features a different way of interpreting the engravings, we also wish to determine how the anonymous painter of Xaltocán selected and transformed this source material.
