Abstract

The only golden baroque altarpieces in Guadalajara are located at the chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Aranzazu, and were originally sponsored by a businessman of Basque origin. These three altarpieces highlight the chapel's historical data and stylistic and iconographic themes, while also establishing links with other places located in Mexico's northwestern region through their formal similarities and the social and economic relations of their sponsors. The latter were leading members of the Basque community which played a fundamental role in regional agricultural, mining and commercial development.
