Abstract

One of the outstanding characteristics of classical Nahuatl is its extremely frequent use of metaphors and diphrasisms. Based on this fact, the author posits that the language of Aztec art may also be highly metaphorical and presents a list of metaphorical expressions, taken from the Florentine Codex, that could be used as keys for explainning a series of works of art. This proposal, whose provisional nature is acknowledged by the author, could open up new possibilities for examining works of art that have been known and studied for a long time.
